The Central Library IIT Roorkee will conduct a three day workshop for Library professionals on Building Digital Libraries using Open Source Software. The workshop is aimed to train professionals in building digital libraries out of their own resources. The software will provide detailed knowledge about two most widely used Open Source Digital Library Software i.e. Greenstone Digital Library GSDL) and DSpace. There will be extensive hands on practice and half day will be devoted to project on developing prototype digital libraries.

The following topics will be discussed

  • Digital Library - Introduction and world scenario;

  • E-resources and their management;

  • Converting print to digital - tools and process;

  • Different file formats, Optical Character Recognition;

  • Metadata Creation;

  • GSDL download , configuration and installation;

  • Collection building with GLI (GreenStone Librarian Interface), designing and creating standard metadata sets;

  • Customization using GLI;

  • Customization using macro files and style-sheets;

  • Home page customization;

  • Collection specific customization;

  • DSpace download and installation and administration and

  • Projects.

Participants will be provided CD-ROMs containing GSDL and DSpace Software and other workshop material for further use in their respective organizations.

The Host

Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee is the oldest engineering educational institution in the country. It was established in 1847 as College of Civil Engineering Roorkee which was renamed as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in the memory of James Thomason (then Lt. Governor of North West Provinces) in 1854. Thomason College was converted into University of Roorkee after independence in 1947 which now have been converted into Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee in 2001 by the Central Government recognizing its national importance.

The Central Library

Central Library of the Institute is one of the best and oldest academic library in the country. It was established in 1848 as the College Library. Later on it was reamed as Central Library. The Library contains more than 3.20 lacs documents in every form of media. It subscribe to more than 8000 journals in e-form and about 1000 titles in print. About 6000 books are added to its collection annually.

The Central Library has recently moved into its state of art building which has been specially designed keeping modern ICT facilities in view. The building has more than 150 I/Os to connect computers while for laptop are provided WI-FI connectivity on the philosophy of Wired desktops wireless laptops. 72 computers are provided to the readers to access various digital resources. The Library maintains six servers, and more 100 desktops, one Minolta PS7000 book scanner, several HP scanners and printers. A training room with latest gadgets has been developed specially for the purpose of continuing education of the professionals. All these facilities make Central Library IIT Roorkee an excellent place to conduct such programmes.

About Roorkee

Roorkee is situated at the foot of Himalayas, has picturesque landscape blessed with holy Ganga canal; and is the gateway to world famous pilgrimage and tourist places of Hardwar, Rishikesh, Valley of flowers, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Dehradun and Mussoorie. It has a population of over 1,00,000 and is at a distance of about 180 Km from Delhi. It is directly connected through railways to Delhi, Bombay, Lucknow, Calcutta, and Amritsar. Regular bus and taxi service is available from Inter State Bus Terminal at Delhi and takes about 5 hours from Delhi to Roorkee. The weather in April is very comfortable however sometimes light woolens may be required woolens are required. Participants are advised to come prepared accordingly.

Lodging, Boarding and Travel

The arrangement for lodging and boarding of participants will be made in Institute's guest houses free of charge during 8th April to 11th April 2008. The participants desirous of staying in hotels will have to make their own arrangement. Travel expenses will be born by participating institutions.

There is no registration fee for the workshop. Participation will strictly be by invitation only from the INDEST members and other sponsoring organizations.
