This workshop will enable participants to develop knowledge of, and practical skills in the installation and implementation of GSDL and DSpace which they can utilize in their own institutions.

VENUE: The workshop will take place at B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Engineering College, Chennai.

Information and communication technologies have transformed the way information is generated, disseminated, preserved, archived, and made accessible. With technology providing unprecedented access to digital resources and information services, digital libraries and institutional repositories are now a worldwide success.

Libraries all over the world are now looking forward to set up digital libraries and institutional repositories using open-source software and provide open access for resource sharing. Developing such repositories is a tremendous challenge, both for institutions as well as information professionals. Towards this end, TERI is organizing the second four-day Workshop on Digital Libraries, aimed at equipping participants with adequate practical knowledge so as to enable them to efficiently undertake digital library projects.

VENUE: The workshop will take place at TERI India Habitat Centre, New Delhi

RESOURCE PERSONS: The workshop will be conducted by the experts in this field.

WHO CAN ATTEND: The workshop is intended for library and information professionals, knowledge managers, information entrepreneurs, and e-content developers, who have an interest or are involved in setting up digital libraries in their respective organizations. The number of participants is being limited to 25.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the workshop is to provide

        ::Familiarize participants with the concepts of digital library and institutional repository
        ::Facilitate understanding of digitization and practical knowledge on the digitization process
        ::Offer hands-on experience to develop digital libraries and use of open-source software such           as DSpace and GSDL (Greenstone Digital Library)
        ::Help participants develop practical skills in the installation of open source software for           creation of digital libraries

PROGRAMME: The workshop programme will include tutorial-type presentations, demonstrations, and practical sessions. It will include the following topics:

        ::Issues and challenges in developing digital libraries
        ::Role of institutional repositories in open access movement
        ::Understanding the digitization process: scanning, OCR (optical character recognition), and           conversion
        ::DSpace: overview, installation, and administration
        ::GSDL: overview, installation, and administration
        ::Converting CDS/ISIS databases to GSDL
        ::Dublin Core metadata standards
        ::OAI–PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting)

Registration fee is Rs 4000 per participant. (Additional registration from the same organization qualifies for a 10% discount). The fee covers workshop kit (reading material; GSDL, DSpace, and associated software CD) and working lunch/tea. The workshop venue will be equipped with Linux/Windows workstations for participants.

DEPARTMENT OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE ANDHRA UNIVERSITY

This workshop will enable participants to develop knowledge of, and practical skills in the installation and implementation of GSDL and DSpacewhich they can utilize in their own institutions.

VENUE: The workshop will take place at the Department of Library and Information Science, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.

RESOURCE PERSONS: Dr M.G.Sreekumar, Librarian & Head, Center for Development of Digital Libraries (CDDL), Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode, Kerala and Smt K.T.Anuradha, Senior Technical Officer, National Centre for Science Information, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

PARTICIPATION: The numbers are limited (20 participants only). Participation in the first instance is reserved for library professionals from the higher education sectors. Only one participant per institution can be accepted to maximize the distributed impact of the workshop.

SKILLS REQUIRED: Before registering, the participants should ensure that they have the following skills.

  1. Solid, hands-on grasp of basic WINDOWS administration.
  2. Good understanding of the Web and ideally experience with web servers such as Apache and their basic configuration.
  3. Familiarity with obtaining and installing software from source bundles:

COSTS: The workshop is being supported by U.G.C. Hence the participants will be charged a nominal amount of Rs 500/ which will also cover the cost of
breakfast, lunch and coffee each day.

DSIR-TERI WORKSHOP ON DIGITAL LIBRARIES

The Workshop on Digital Libraries is being organized by TERI with support from Technology Information Facilitation Programme of Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India. The aim of the Workshop is to equip participants with adequate practical knowledge so as to enable them to efficiently carry out digital library projects using open-source software. The LIC has undertaken digital library initiatives and has developed a comprehensive electronic library that provides rich and structured content through online, remote, and continuous access to resources. It is a common gateway that provides free facility to browse and search various forms of digital publications.

The Centre regularly organizes seminar, workshops, and conferences with an objective to create a forum for interaction among library and information professionals to keep abreast of the latest developments in the fields of information science and related IT applications.

UNESCO - DSIR - IIMK International Workshop on Greenstone

FOR WHOM :- The programme would be of interest to librarians, information professionals, IT faculty and software professionals belonging to the Academia, Government and NGOs in India and from other Asian countries.

OBJECTIVE:-The objective of the Workshop is to conduct a 6-day high-end training programme on Digital Libraries using the Open Source Software ‘Greenstone’ at IIM Kozhikode (http://www.iimk.ac.in). The target audience are the librarians and information professionals, including software professionals belonging to the academia, Government and NGOs in India and those from other Asian countries.

COVERAGE:-The Workshop shall be designed to facilitate the participants in creating state-of-art digital libraries using the Greenstone Open Source DL software, which include software installation, configuration, customization, digitization and other related workflow operations, content development and management, designing and creating standard metadata sets to describe digital objects and encoding it in standard markup formats.

PEDAGOGY:-The workshop will be conducted at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) which is equipped with world-class lecture rooms and computing laboratories with high speed Internet link. Each participant will be provided a PC supplemented with LCD projected demos. The pedagogy will be a mix of Lectures, Discussions, Case studies and Hands -on Sessions. Each participant shall also be provided with a CD-ROM comprising of the Greenstone Software, faculty presentations, and other related software packages. Extensive hands-on labs will be a hall mark of this programme.

REGISTRATION:- A registration fee of Rs 1000/- per participant will be charged. The registration fee is to be paid in advance by Demand Draft in favour of Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode payable at Calicut.

DATE AND VENUE:-This programme will be held during November 27 – December 02, 2006 at Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode Campus, Kunnamangalam, Calicut.. Accommodation will be provided on a twin sharing basis in the IIMK Guest Houses.

LAST DATE:-Nomination forms duly endorsed by the Head of the Institution along with DD should reach the FDP Office latest by 15th October, 2006. The acceptance will be communicated by 17th November, 2006 by e-mail. DD will be returned to those who are not selected for the programme.
